Preserving ST Specialty Rice with Modified Atmosphere Packaging – A Solution to Improve Export Quality

ST rice—especially ST25—is a source of pride for Sóc Trăng province and the entire Mekong Delta, having won the title of “World’s Best Rice” multiple times. However, preserving its exceptional quality from the field to the table requires advanced preservation technology. Among the most effective methods is Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP).

MAP technology controls the internal atmosphere of the packaging by adjusting the proportions of O₂, CO₂, and N₂. When used for rice preservation, MAP inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold, and insects without the use of chemicals. This helps extend storage time while retaining the rice's fragrance, texture, and safety.

Companies such as Lộc Trời Group, Tân Long Group, and other rice enterprises in Long An and An Giang have invested in large-scale MAP packaging systems. MAP-packaged rice is now available in premium domestic supermarkets and exported to markets including the U.S., Australia, Singapore, and the Middle East. This is a clear testament to how preservation technology can elevate the value of Vietnamese agricultural products.

In the long term, small-scale MAP technology should be transferred to cooperatives to create clean, specialty rice products packaged to international standards for both domestic and global markets.
